Medical Student of the Month
Our student of the month is Lily Hickey, MS3!
Lily consistently goes above and beyond to care for her patients as people, not just diagnoses. While on her inpatient Internal Medicine rotation, she cared for a patient who had recently undergone a below-the-knee amputation and was struggling emotionally with the adjustment. He was often tearful and clearly going through a difficult time. After learning that his birthday was the following day and that he would still be hospitalized, Lily made a point to ask about his favorite candy. The next day, she organized a small celebration, bringing him his favorite candy from the vending machine, creating a birthday card signed by the team, and singing happy birthday with her classmates. The patient was incredibly moved by the gesture and expressed deep gratitude. He then asked if they would pray with him, and Lily joined in, holding his hand and taking time to support him in a way that was meaningful to him. In the days that followed, he appeared more hopeful, a reflection of the compassion and humanity Lily brings to patient care.
