For nearly a century, the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) has been committed to the advancement of women in medicine. Although the number of women choosing careers in medicine has grown substantially, there has not been a commensurate increase in the percentage of women in senior leadership positions. To redress this situation, AMWA has carried out ambitious advocacy efforts including research, constituency building, mentoring, leadership development, and policy reform to enable environmental and institutional transformation.
AMWA Girls' Puberty Workshop
The LSU Health Shreveport chapter of the American Medical Women’s Association hosts an annual Girls' Puberty Workshop for girls ages 9-14. Puberty can be a confusing journey, but understanding it doesn’t have to be. This educational workshop is designed for both girls and their parents, fostering positive attitudes about this important transition. Participants will learn about the maturation process, receive essential supplies, and explore health-conscious hygiene and nutrition practices, all while encouraging a confident and healthy perspective on growing up.
GET INVOLVED!
The LSU Health Shreveport Chapter of AMWA was chartered in 2015 by a small group of dedicated students who wanted to create a community passionate about women in health professions, while also impacting the community at large by addressing issues related to women's health. Our Branch consists of Medical Students, Residents, and Physicians from LSU Health Shreveport.
