Match Day is the culmination of four challenging years, and, in some ways, is the most exciting day of the medical school experience. Every year at a predetermined time, medical students across the country learn simultaneously which hospital will educate them for the next three to seven years.
Up until Match Day, senior medical students complete numerous applications and interviews at the residencies of their choice. They rank the places where they would like to continue their medical training. The residency programs in turn rank the applicants and the National Resident Matching Program produced the computer-generated matches.

LSU Health Shreveport is proud to announce that 97.8% of applicants matched, including those who were selected for research fellowships, with 95.1% of the School of Medicine’s applicants matching into clinical residencies through the National Resident Matching Program® (NMRP®) proving that LSUHS remains a strong competitor at the national level. The NMRP reported that the national average for the 2026 Main Residency Match® was 93.5%.
Of the 2026 class of 142 students, 23.2% will be staying at LSU Health Shreveport for their residency with a total of 43.5% of the 2026 graduates staying in Louisiana. 76.7% of those staying in Louisiana for a residency will be doing so at an LSU affiliated academic medical center.
